IELTS

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English proficiency test for higher education, migration, and work. Recognized by over 12,500 organizations globally, it comprehensively assesses all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Test Formats & Types

Your purpose will determine the exact version of the test you need to take:

  • IELTS Academic: Measures whether your English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment (e.g., studying abroad or professional registration).
  • IELTS General Training: Ideal for those migrating to English-speaking countries (like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK) or looking for secondary education and work experience.
  • IELTS for UKVI: Government-approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT) required for specific UK visa categories.

Exam Structure

Both main test formats share the same Speaking and Listening sections, but differ in Reading and Writing. You can choose to take the test on paper or computer

  • Listening (30 mins): 4 sections, 40 questions.
  • Reading (60 mins): 3 sections, 40 questions.
  • Writing (60 mins): 2 tasks (e.g., analyzing graphs/data or writing a formal essay).
  • Speaking (11–14 mins): Face-to-face oral interview with an examiner.

Scoring System

IELTS is graded on a band scale of  non-user to expert user.

Your final score is the average of the four individual skill scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Most top universities require a score between  6.5 and 7.5.
